Default Cornel West: Obama is a "Rockefeller republican in blackface"

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/1...m_hp_ref=media

West made headlines when, during the interview with Amy Goodman, he called President Obama a "Rockefeller Republican in blackface." But he also reserved very harsh words for Al Sharpton, Melissa Harris-Perry and frequent MSNBC guest host Michael Eric Dyson. Goodman played a clip of Dyson defending Obama's record, and asked West and fellow guest Tavis Smiley to comment. (Jump to 11:35 in the above video)

"I love Brother Mike Dyson, but we're living in a society where everybody is up for sale," West said. "Everything is up for sale. And he and Brother Sharpton and Sister Melissa and others, they have sold their souls for a mess of Obama pottage. And we invite them back to the black prophetic tradition after Obama leaves. But at the moment, they want insider access, and they want to tell those kind of lies. They want to turn their back to poor and working people. And it's a sad thing to see them as apologists for the Obama administration in that way, given the kind of critical background that all of them have had at some point."

I don't agree with much of West's view, but it's nice to see some left wingers aren't in total denial when it comes to Obama's foreign policy...

He's right x1000000. I remember he came to speak at one of our department's events...I wonder how all of the rabid Obama-ers there would receive him now.

    Here's a cynical view.

You can't win a US presidential election on foreign policy, but you can sure as hell lose one on it. Even if it doesn't cost the President re-election, a foreign fiasco can seriously distract him from his domestic agenda. So Obama makes damn sure he can never be attacked from the right on his foreign policy, whether he personally agrees with it or not.

I actually love cornell west. I think a lot of the "liberal media bias" that right wingers accuse the mainstream media of is used to hush up people like him or bill maher because they sound too audacious
For all that we have done, as a civilization, as individuals, the universe is not stable, and nor is any single thing within it. Stars consume themselves, the universe itself rushes apart, and we ourselves are composed of matter in constant flux. Colonies of cells in temporary alliance, replicating and decaying and housed within, an incandescent cloud of electrical impulses. This is reality, this is self knowledge, and the perception of it will, of course, make you dizzy.

I'm not sure I completely agree with West, but I do agree with the idea that Obama is center-right. He's governing like a Republican, which makes it all the more infuriating (for me) when I hear Republicans complaining about Obama being a socialist. As a party, Republicans are so willfully deluded it might as well be a religion.
"We grow up thinking that beliefs are something to be proud of, but they're really nothing but opinions one refuses to reconsider. Beliefs are easy. The stronger your beliefs are, the less open you are to growth and wisdom, because "strength of belief" is only the intensity with which you resist questioning yourself. As soon as you are proud of a belief, as soon as you think it adds something to who you are, then you've made it a part of your ego."

Part of what makes the liberals win is that we're still the funny ones. There was a time when Rush was funny. I think it's something to be praised haha

This is related to why I voted third-party this election.

There are a lot of ways that this is true. Obama has been chosen by someone like me for being a lesser evil. We are in very right-wing times in the USA, and for a left-winger Obama was unfortunately the best man readily available. Anything better requires much longer, harder work and possibly serious conflict in the name of changing the whole system at this point.

But since there's are such right-wing times, suggesting Obama is anything other than solidly left-wing is an instantly marginalizing opinion.
    Go to sleep, iguana.
