    Default Petraeus resigns, citing affair.

    http://news.msn.com/politics/cia-dir...traeus-resigns

Not much to say about it at this point, except that I hope to God the affair wasn't the type that compromised national security (its actually conceivable that he resigned in response to a blackmail attempt, accepting disgrace rather than betraying his country....though its more likely he's doing it for family reasons, and is doing so now instead of earlier because he didn't want to create a distraction during the Presidential campaign).

That really sucks. Petraeus seems to be a honorable man who was good at his job.

I do think it's a little weird that you can be so honored for basically killing people, but then have to resign in disgrace because you had an extramarital affair.
    Go to sleep, iguana.

I think this less about a moral thing and more about having his shit together, following oaths and commitments, etc. etc.

It's duty and obligation and all that. People in command are held to a high standard. Not for morality, but as a reflection of being stable, trustworthy, and able to carry out commitments and duties no matter what they are.

Nobody sees the convenience in having him resign right AFTER the election?

Now he doesn't have to talk in front of Congress "under oath". Jesus Christ.

The Obama administration knew about the attack as it was happening and they are covering it up now that they won the election. Sad...and anyone who suggests this connection is going to be portrayed as a conspiracy theorist no matter the evidence. The masses are puppets and Obama pulls the strings.

You are one of many who find the whole thing odd and suspicious.

Congress has the power to supoena(sic) him any time they want to.

I saw it as a practical decision. Basically, someone that high up who does that exposes himself and his lover to easy blackmail by foreign opponents. Many articles seem to include the following paragraph or two:

For the director of the CIA, being engaged in an extramarital affair is considered a serious breach of security and a counterintelligence threat. If a foreign government had learned of the affair, the reasoning goes, Petraeus or Broadwell could have been blackmailed or otherwise compromised. Military justice considers conduct such as an extramarital affair to be possible grounds for court-martial.

Failure to resign also could create the perception for the rank and file that such behavior is acceptable.
