Good point. Although I'm not sure the cops will willingly give up their guns.

Or did you not really mean "everyone"?

    But this misses the point.

    There will always be guns.

I support the idea of keeping people from owning guns in principle, but in reality, I don't know if there is an effective way to keep people from having them.

If it were reasonably possible, I would support a ban on most guns. Definitely hand guns and assult rifles, even if I might leave the hunting rifles.

What about most situations, in which guns can't be kept our of peoples' reach? Well, I had a bit of a funny idea, and you can take it however seriously you want. How about giving everyone a gun?
I honestly wonder what would happen. I think it would actually be fairly harmless for some cultures, but I tend to think that it would cause major problems in the USA.

You know, one of my favorite pieces of advise from Machiavelli is that when you assume power over a people, you should not disarm the armed, you should arm the unarmed. They will really love and trust you if you do that, and you suddenly get a free militia on your side.

I like never seeing guns in the UK (except for the special cops at airports, which I can understand).

At least I can run away from a thug with a knife. I'd also have to have a lot more violent/personal crime of passion to use a cheese grater on someone than I would a gun from 10 yards.

I personally don't care much about guns either way.

Everyone should be issued paintball guns and body armor at birth.

I think gun control would be a grand idea if every police force everywhere could possibly have all the resources, time, and charity to protect and defend everyone equally. But the fact is, since a court decision rightfully determined that it would be physically impossible for them to be expected to do so in every case, the police have no legal obligation to defend anyone. OK, so there goes that option for human defense. What's the other option? Oh, that's banned? shit.
    I don't wanna!

I say the less limitations the better. We live in a very violent and frightened culture that is still plagued by many prejudices and superstitions. It's a good idea that we arm everyone with the best weapons money can buy. And I'm not even being sarcastic.

Considering how well Bush has done getting armor for our troops, I don't think giving body armor to everyone at birth would be an easy task.
