I think you're right. Well... if by "usual" you mean pre-Bush usual.

    1. The VP will be a white middle aged male because both a black and a female running at once would be too risky for Obama. People want change, but I think he fears they don't want that much change at once.
    2. The Clintons are too powerful, so Obama probably doesn't want Hilary too close.
Agreed. I think Edwards would be an excellent, complimentary choice.

The problem with picking a white man as VP is it would give the racist wackos even more incentive to "knock off" Obama.

I don't think it matters unless he picks someone really off the wall. Right after the nominees are decided, the choice of VP seems really important because the wounds are fresh from the primary battle and it's interesting to see which former rival is turned into an ally. But by the conventions and the debates in the fall, it's rather irrelevant. There's a good reason they call VP "the most irrelevant job in America". I can't imagine the VP choice swinging someone's vote.

That said, I think it would be a bad idea to pick Hillary. Obama needs the Clintons all up in his shit like he needs a hole in the head. Besides, Hillary would choose to see it as a coalition government instead of being the good soldier.

You know, as I think about it, there is one situation in which the VP would matter, and that is if the presidential candidate is old as dirt or in poor health. So McCain's choice may have some import.

I don't think such a person needs a strategic reason like that.
The bile and hatred spewing out of your average talk radio show would probably be incentive enough.

He should pick Howard Dean then. Nobody would want to "knock off" Obama then.

Hopefully he'll pick Al Sharpton, so a landslide defeat is guaranteed.

Whoever the media slants the propaganda to, will win, no matter who they pick as VP.

It will be interesting to see how things go the closer we get. Remember with Bush I, they had the staged "Oh my I don't understand how these modern cash registers work!" and then he fell in the polls.
