David Brooks, a Republican columnist for the New York Times who I generally consider very mediocre actually wrote a pretty decent analysis of this.
    Thurston Howell Romney

I have to say that so far nobody has made this all sound worse than the Republicans who have attempted to defend what he's saying. They only further magnify the image of plutocratic self-absorption, and they come across (at least to me) like they have little to no understanding of sociology and economics, both in the context of the USA and just in general.

EDIT: I want to add that this absolute winner in the worst defense contest is John Sununu, who accused Romney's critics of trying to wage class warfare. Here is a man telling a crowd of super wealthy donors that 47% of the American population, in this case a demographic that leans heavily toward poorer people, is lacking in integrity and not worth worrying about. Mr. Sununu believes that only those who would condemn this are waging class warfare.

We shall see. There are people saying that Romney should make this THE issue of the campaign. So I think there is a chance Romney's campaign is going to take a strategy far different from "damage control" regarding what to do about this leak.

Which makes my brain hurt. There are all of these people who take this as a chance to be speak the truth against a politically correct establishment, but the problem is that it isn't the truth. What Romney said is factually wrong in at least two ways and highly misleading another. A lot of the people I've read supportive comments from are probably in the 47% Romney was referring to and don't even realize it.
