    Yeah what now?
That's cool! It's like the Azimuthal equidistant projection, but with the gross distortion of the southern hemisphere resolved!
Reading a lot of maps from an atlas when I was growing up, it seems all the projections distorted places somewhere. Although this one is over 100 years old too; I wonder why the atlases didn't have it.

Yeah, it's a very accurate projection. It only distorts in four points (where the points of the 'diamond' shape are) and you can tessellate it even. Strangely though, it doesn't get used. Probably because it looks 'strange' when people aren't used to a different perspective - many seem to prefer the more traditional yet distorted ones.

    Saw that too:

Funny that the equator becomes a SQUARE ("diamond"), but the good thing is that its corners (where the distortion is) are all in the middle of oceans, so no land is being distorted. That's what makes this one so good!

Yup, it's pretty awesome. I think people maybe have problems with it because they equate 'north' with 'up'. But it's not bad when you just say north is 'towards the center' and south is 'towards the corners'.

Still, the Azimuthals are fairly popular, and north is center in those too.
