Talking Stoner alert: McDonald’s gets you legally high

Do you want marijuana chemicals with that?

Fats in foods like potato chips and french fries make them nearly irresistible because they trigger natural marijuana-like chemicals in the body called endocannabinoids, researchers at the University of California, Irvine, have found.

The researchers discovered that when rats tasted something fatty, cells in their upper gut started producing endocannabinoids, while sugars and proteins did not have this effect.

Ok, so this is very sensationalistic and so forth, but what do you guys think of this? Do corporations have an ethical responsibility to make sure their products are not chemically addictive? Should we have sympathy for people addicted to carbs? How do we ensure a healthy disease free non-addictive food chain/distribution system for society? Other thoughts?
For all that we have done, as a civilization, as individuals, the universe is not stable, and nor is any single thing within it. Stars consume themselves, the universe itself rushes apart, and we ourselves are composed of matter in constant flux. Colonies of cells in temporary alliance, replicating and decaying and housed within, an incandescent cloud of electrical impulses. This is reality, this is self knowledge, and the perception of it will, of course, make you dizzy.

    I'm not surprised.

you can get addicted to anything like chewing your finger nails or eating paper. the fact that fatty foods release endocannabinoids happens with meat and pretty much anything fatty, making fat illegal because it releases perfectly normal neurochemical reaction makes no sense. not to mention that these endocannabinoids doesent resemble THC in its effects to psyche and neither does it come with such high doses as what you get from smoking weed

We're biologically equipped with cannabanoid receptors, as the article pointed out. I think it's funny that they mentioned clogging the receptors with other drugs, because in the case of marijuana intake, food cravings are more powerful.

Don't worry. Nobody is making fat illegal.

It's a retardedly sensationalist title. This is Fox News worthy distortion. This has nothing to do with McDonalds, AND it ignores that fact that it triggers this response because THAT'S HOW YOU BREAK DOWN FAT.

This is part of a NORMAL regulatory system that your super-complex body has in place. You eat fats. Those fats trigger endocannabinoids. Those endocannabinoids are part of a signaling process that triggers specific hydrolase enzymes that break that fat down so that your body can utilize it. Endocannabinoids are crucial to bioregulation. Most signaling processes in you body are like a line of dominos. One chemical hits a receptor, which releases another chemical, which releases something else, which breaks down a molecule, and that molecule goes on to signal another thing. On and on and on into a complex chain of events that may branch out and impact 20 different processes. You can't just simplify a single chemical in your body and say "Well, this is bad."

I mean, sure, lets not put shit like Mcdonalds into our bodies. I can get behind that. But this is something that normal, natural fats induce in our bodies. This is the same system that encourages newborn babies to suck milk out of their mother's tit. Milk = fat = endocannabinoids = baby is able to break down fats + the supposed 'high' encourages the baby to have a healthy appetite and keep on sucking.

Lets start banning breast feeding because of these damned babies getting high. I can see the news article now. "Millions of mothers getting their babies high. Should social services be involved?"

Yeah, I pretty much came here to say this, but you said it better.

"Do corporations have an ethical responsibility to make sure their products are not chemically addictive?" - to make foods not "chemically addictive", they would have no fat and no sugars and we would all starve to death.
