The gold medalist in question pretty much got adopted by the state and since 16 has done nothing but dive at a state diving center. She doesn't have real contact with her family and her dad waited until after she got her 3rd medal to tell her that 1) her mother's had cancer for the last 8 years and 2) her grandparents died the previous year.

It makes me wonder what would have happened if she didn't win a gold. Would her dad just have withheld the information from her even longer?

I can't believe they wouldn't tell her sooner. Were they afraid she'd fall apart emotionally and destroy her chances of winning gold? Is winning gold more important than what goes on in the family?

Well is that not understandable CzeCze since he wouldnt want to ruin her chances of success or cause her to lose her focus?
