I've come to appreciate Metropolitan areas as I've gotten older. In fact, I prefer them.

Off-hand, I have been to Washington D.C., Baltimore, Orlando, New York and my personal favorite, Philadelphia.
I enjoy the architecture and communal feel of that one.

I have my sights set on Pittsburgh for the next travel. During Football season, too.

Pittsburgh was pretty cool. It would be a decent place to live. Lots of hills and lots of townhomes. You'd probably need a car. It is extremely midwestern.

We don't build on hills or ridges in Canberra so the Bush comes right into the city.

It's the best of both worlds - a first rate city with the Bush just outside the door.

We held an international competition to design Canberra so Canberra is a designer city, convenient, safe and cool.

    The Capital of a Continent.

I've been to a few. Not a lot.

I grew up in Greensboro, NC. Loved it. Still love it. It's not a big city, though- something like the third largest city in North Carolina and way lower on the national list.
The only big city I've ever lived in was NYC- we lived in Manhattan for most of a year in the late 90s right after we got married. It was awesome. I love New York and can't wait to take my kids and show them all our old haunts. Drawbacks: it was very expensive and I wouldn't want to raise kids there unless I were filthy rich.

    Other NC cities:
Raleigh is a little on the conservative side for my taste but I do like it there.
Asheville is exactly as rhinosaur describes it, but I still love the shit out of it.
Charlotte has some fun features and good restaurants but too much sprawl and corruption for me to want to live there.
Winston-Salem sucks. That's not really fair; it has some interesting historical stuff. But for the most part, it sucks.

Cities outside NC I've spent time in:
Atlanta is pretty great. Very warm (literally and figuratively).
Miami reminds me of bad TV.
Key West (not really a city but the biggest thing south of Miami), meh.
    Iowa City was surprisingly awesome.
    Salt Lake City smelled bad.

My favorite is san francisco. Some other good ones are washington dc, paris, toronto, montreal, chicago, dublin, bogata, and melbourne. I hate nyc. People are horrible there.

I didn't find people to be horrible in NYC at all. What was your experience?

You know - I love Biltmore but dont think of Ashville as a city. More like a town.

Loud. Mean. Aggressive. Example - I did some stuff at goldman sachs. Norm is to yell and swear at each other. Like rats in too small of a space. Where else on earth do I have to tell a cab driver how to go to where i am going to.

Big cities suck! I live in Oakland and could go to San Francisco all the time, but I refuse to. I hate it.

Big cities that I've liked.. Paris & Amsterdam.

I've never been to Biltmore. It costs like fifty bucks!

You're probably right, in the nationwide/worldwide context. But although small compared to major cities, Asheville has some urban features compared to the various small towns surrounding it. Like a sizeable homeless population.
