I suppose you could argue that the definition in the 1944 edition has made the same mistake at the objectivists and defined the word through their world perspective which values parents and superiors? It's substitutes submission to parents and teachers for "action in accordance with moral principles" because they equate submission to parents and teachers with being moral?

The definition of dutiful could apply to objectivists if we assume that "the one who has the right" is only the individual themselves?

Also, the number 1) and the "..." suggest that this is a manipulative quote of only one of several meanings.

That one dictionary names this as one of several meanings proves next to nothing.

That sounds better. And the fact that the dictionary was published in 1944 - wwii and Nazis with their strict views of "duty." But when I google for a definition, it is basically synonymous with "obligation."

Rand just happened to believe that "duty" was a term used by Nazi types.

True. So why do you think Rand considered the 1944 definition to be more "honest"?

Because even if it is not an accurate definition it exposes the motive behind use of the word duty, which she feels is to reinforce the prevailing altruistic system.

Yes, and because all her ideas are throwbacks to a previous generation. And so she waged a war against conceptual notions that existed only in her mind, and then tried to convince others to follow her mindset.
