    1. 12 murders in one place naturally draw more attention than 12 murders in 12 different places. Such incidents are rarer and produce a greater spectacle (which brings me to #2).

    2. Our morbid interest in/curiosity about the dark side of our nature.

    3. I think MacGuffin makes a good point, too.

The people are hungry for blood!

    Cuz they were white!

Actually, the truth isn't far off, they're in our tribe. We can see it happening to us, we can see ourselves in them at a movie theatre, and imagine it happening to us. We can't imagine ourselves starving under some tin roof in Africa.

EDIT: I suppose in that way we also feel responsible for the wrongs in our villiage.

I don't think anyone thinks this is new. Being human is difficult to cope with. This has always been the case, I'm sure.

I made that statement because I've encountered many people who do often seem surprised, & appear to be under the impression that this sort of thing is increasing drastically over time. I quoted your post because typically that's how said perception is often expressed [not that it was necessarily your perception, if that makes sense? ], thus it was easy to springboard from/build upon.

I agree with your point, to an extent, as I think I demonstrated in my long post above, but, as I also said in post, isn't this kind of stuff increasing?

I don't think we really had these kinds of incidents much before Columbine.

It seems like they're becoming a more-and-more regular occurrence nowadays.

I get how the media might cover them more now, and we're all so much more connected, but still...

I dunno... I think they're taking on a copycat flavor... each one kinda trying to outdo the last one...

I mean the manner in which the violent acts are carried out may share a similar M.O., sure.. but I guess I was focusing on general acts of violence toward groups of people by twisted individuals, independent of how it's done.

I do think media coverage of events like this can inspire people to act on their already existing impulses in the same fashion, &/or incite them to up the ante, definitely. Plenty of fresh material to feed fixations in a sick mind.

We are influenced by everything around us, which is a double-edged sword, I suppose.
