Checks and balances are a part of the American democratic system. This enables one branch of government to place limitations of power on the other two branches so that the amount of power is divided equally and they are unable to circumvent these constitutional limitations. An example of checks and balances is the president's veto power over legislation coming from the legislative branch.

    Umm, what?
"We grow up thinking that beliefs are something to be proud of, but they're really nothing but opinions one refuses to reconsider. Beliefs are easy. The stronger your beliefs are, the less open you are to growth and wisdom, because "strength of belief" is only the intensity with which you resist questioning yourself. As soon as you are proud of a belief, as soon as you think it adds something to who you are, then you've made it a part of your ego."

Hmm, proves how little I know about your system. I'm having trouble enough summing up the interest to understand the workings of my own government. I was under the impression legislators were not voted by the public.

You might be thinking of the Supreme Court, although it might be the effect of your news media not focusing on anything but presidential elections, as if that's all there is.

Pretty much yes. We have a much different system than america too. We've political parties that have to make a coalition consisting out of 50%+ of the votes. The coalition gets to write the plan for that time of office. The rest becomes the opposition and voices their opinions about the ongoings of that coalition. There are 150 seats, for the coalition and opposition together and when they need to reach a descision, they all vote.

It is a very crappy system if you can't reach a coalition of 50%+ votes that actually vibe well together though, which has been our main problem for the last ten years or so.
