A man builds. A parasite asks 'Where is my share?'
A man creates. A parasite says, 'What will the neighbors think?'
A man invents. A parasite says, 'Watch out, or you might tread on the toes of God... '
On a more serious note, I'm surprised that all of you are surprised. The school/court system has been like this for a long time. They're sticklers on attendance. Never mind that once students get there they check their brains out at the door.

What doesn't make sense to me is in light of her family situation isn't she either 1) technically emancipated or 2) a minor who's been abandoned by her parents? Where is social services? Why didn't the judge get her a counselor instead of "just doing his job by mechanically pushing some buttons"
I've never heard of people being jailed for truancy. You skip enough you get kicked out, period. Ive seen that happen in CA public school. Tons of kids skip school everyday in DC or rather there are LOTS of teens hanging around in the middle of the day and I've never seen a cop or transit official question them. Granted, dc public schools should NOT be a model for any other city's public schools.
The judge is catching a lot of heat for the decision - he has the chance to ocerturn it after the long weekend - but I think Texas has some explaining to do and this also highlights the dangers of bureaucracy.
Systems are built relying on cogs in the machine like this judge to just "do their job"
I feel so bad for this girl. I wouldn't be surprised if she has a nervous breakdown (or rather I think she's having one right now) the cultural pressure on her (being Vietnamese American and the eldest daughter) is immense by itself without being persecuted by a misguided legal system.
