Attending high school is required by law in America? What the hell kind of a place is that?

An arcane and arbitrary place of peace and understanding.

yes, quite terrible. A failure on the family, school district and state levels. Maybe she'll learn her lesson, quit her job and apply for all manner of state/federal assistance.

Sick. The fine alone was already stupid.

Hahaha, the judge is Moriarty? No wonder.

On a more serious note, I'm surprised that all of you are surprised. The school/court system has been like this for a long time. They're sticklers on attendance. Never mind that once students get there they check their brains out at the door.

Why does it always have to be Texas?

It's only Texas nine times out of ten. Every once in a while it's South Carolina.

I figured this must be a joke at first. I was ready to put you all on Literally Unbelievable.

Even if she weren't an honours student and working and all that...they put students in jail if they miss school? WTF?

What doesn't make sense to me is in light of her family situation isn't she either 1) technically emancipated or 2) a minor who's been abandoned by her parents? Where is social services? Why didn't the judge get her a counselor instead of "just doing his job by mechanically pushing some buttons"

I've never heard of people being jailed for truancy. You skip enough you get kicked out, period. Ive seen that happen in CA public school. Tons of kids skip school everyday in DC or rather there are LOTS of teens hanging around in the middle of the day and I've never seen a cop or transit official question them. Granted, dc public schools should NOT be a model for any other city's public schools.

The judge is catching a lot of heat for the decision - he has the chance to ocerturn it after the long weekend - but I think Texas has some explaining to do and this also highlights the dangers of bureaucracy.

Systems are built relying on cogs in the machine like this judge to just "do their job"

I feel so bad for this girl. I wouldn't be surprised if she has a nervous breakdown (or rather I think she's having one right now) the cultural pressure on her (being Vietnamese American and the eldest daughter) is immense by itself without being persecuted by a misguided legal system.
