I think that you can't trully be a free market lover and be totally cool with massive subventions and side with Socialists (ex-communists) on every elections.
Or if this is actually the case then some definitions need to be redefined.

Ok, lets leave it at this.

In Ireland they capitalised TWICE on the exporting of jobs from wealthy economies and did all they could with special tax arrangements to entice investors and TWICE the country suffered when conditions changes on those same investors home fronts and they pulled out of the country or at least reduced their investment stakes.

It created a situation of total dependency too, so when massively unpopular decisions where made which were nto strictly economic but geo-political, such as the US take over of an airstripe in Dublin there wasnt anything the politicians could have done other than accept it, its unlikely they would have been willing to alienate their friends in foreign governments, all being a single class or status group, but if they had been willing to bend to domestic opinion the US made it clear they could change domestic economic policy in such a way that investment would dry up.
I'm glad you can find one circumstance to support your theory.

Let me counter with the fact the since the Human race has adopted capitalism, the pace of technological advance has increased at a greater speed than at any other time in history.

The competitive aspect of capitalism forces human kind to sharpen it's skills against itself constantly, no other economic paradigm currently in existence can replace the innovation incentive contained in capitalism.

Yes there are negative aspects of it, but the wholesale aversion to capitalism I see on this board seems reflective of a world view that has no understanding of how the world actually works.

You guys can read your academics and hawk your theories all you want.

And I'm all for trying with reasonable regulation to restrain the worst excesses in the system, but I'll laugh in the face of anyone saying there's something better out there than our current economic paradigm.

Nah man, you're just relatively wealthy so you don't care. It's pretty clear. Let's be honest with ourselves, it's easier.

In what way is that a refutation of my argument.

    Oh right... it's not.

It's not meant to be a refutation? And I don't even disagree with you. It just reads like an empty political speech.

I'll leave it up to history to determine who's right or wrong.

It's quaint that you think my arguments prove yours.

That's how I respond to people who call me a rich asshole in not so many words.
