Awesome. Use a straw? One of those fake penises for drug tests?

For all that we have done, as a civilization, as individuals, the universe is not stable, and nor is any single thing within it. Stars consume themselves, the universe itself rushes apart, and we ourselves are composed of matter in constant flux. Colonies of cells in temporary alliance, replicating and decaying and housed within, an incandescent cloud of electrical impulses. This is reality, this is self knowledge, and the perception of it will, of course, make you dizzy.

ROFL. "Blessed art thou, Helen, among all women..."

Hopefully at some point the entire forum will be on that Ignore list, and then we won't have to worry about it anymore.

I'm going to guess that's just called "life."

People with character show it by their actions over time, it's not the kind of thing that works in a short-term setting such as a "pageant" (and typically people of character aren't trying to "compete" to see who has the most of it); and the reward is being respected by others and entrusted with things that matter.

Beauty pageants seem to be about something else. And we have other competitions where people can showcase other types of qualities (like the Olympics showcasing physical skill and dedication, or art competitions judging one's artistic abilities, etc.)

That is true I suppose; to really move beyond something superficial and towards something deep can't be summed up in a tiny little contest.

Also, on a related note; perhaps I'm not too familiar with beauty pageants, but aren't they usually based on image alone? I mean people only care about how pretty each girl looks, so what does it matter what genitelia they may have had at any point in time? If it looks, acts, and talks like a woman, it probably should qualify as one at least in these contests. Just a passing observation.

I figure if she was already elected as Miss Canada, that means she beat out all the other women in the contest in terms of her femininity. *shrug* It's not like she's a token player.

Here in Brazil, there's a well-known short novel called The Alienist. In it, a renowned psychiatrist returns from his studies in Europe to build an asylum in a small town. He soon starts seeing people's quirks and idiosyncrasies as mental disorders, and progressively institutionalizes pretty much everyone in town. Finally, he concludes that, since he's the only person there whose rational faculties are impeccable, he's the insane one - so, he frees everyone and decides to study his own "pathology" as both analyst and patient.

I hope Lark's story ends on a similarly whimsical note.

I really couldn't care less about beauty pageants, but wouldn't this ultimately hurt ratings? I'm all for equality, but I thought these things were all about males fantasizing about these women. Oh well, it won't have any impact on my life, so I say more power to them.
"We grow up thinking that beliefs are something to be proud of, but they're really nothing but opinions one refuses to reconsider. Beliefs are easy. The stronger your beliefs are, the less open you are to growth and wisdom, because "strength of belief" is only the intensity with which you resist questioning yourself. As soon as you are proud of a belief, as soon as you think it adds something to who you are, then you've made it a part of your ego."
