    Missionaries

The Marines have landed in Darwin, Australia, just yesterday, and the Marine Captain told us the Marines are here in a mission.

He told us the Marines are proud that they focus on their mission until it is completed.

And so inadvertantly revealed themselves as missionaries.

Why do you always have to be such a downer?
For all that we have done, as a civilization, as individuals, the universe is not stable, and nor is any single thing within it. Stars consume themselves, the universe itself rushes apart, and we ourselves are composed of matter in constant flux. Colonies of cells in temporary alliance, replicating and decaying and housed within, an incandescent cloud of electrical impulses. This is reality, this is self knowledge, and the perception of it will, of course, make you dizzy.

    It's called critical thinking.

And I understand you don't like critical thinking because it causes you cognitive dissonance which is emotionally painful.

Critical thinking is liberating. Critical thinking liberates us for new ideas and new feelings. Critical thinking is lively, even ecstatic.

And I understand you call critical thinking a downer because you are depressed and looking for distraction and comfort.

Yeah, you're right disassociation is a great alternative to optimism

I bring you, The Rouge Nation of Epicure Mountainon!

    http://www.nationstates.net/nation=epicure_mountainon

    Civil Rights: Superb
    Economy: Fragile
    Political Freedoms: Excellent

The Rogue Nation of Epicure Mountainon is a fledgling, genial nation, remarkable for its absence of drug laws. Its compassionate, intelligent population of 5 million enjoy extensive civil rights and enjoy a level of social equality free from the usual accompanying government corruption.

The enormous, liberal, socially-minded government devotes most of its attentions to Social Welfare, with areas such as Law & Order and Religion & Spirituality receiving almost no funds by comparison. The average income tax rate is 33%, but much higher for the wealthy. The private sector is almost wholly made up of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, although the government is looking at stamping this out.

Crime is well under control. Epicure Mountainon's national animal is the Lion, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the Dollar.

This game aggrandizes everything! I voted yesterday to allow a union strike and allow nudists the freedom to go nude if they wanted to. This is the effect on my nation:

he Protectorate of Apes in chainmail riding tyrannosaurs is a fledgling, socially progressive nation, notable for its devotion to social welfare. Its compassionate, cynical population of 6 million are ruled with an iron fist by the dictatorship government, which ensures that no-one outside the party gets too rich. In their personal lives, however, citizens are relatively unoppressed; it remains to be seen whether this is because the government genuinely cares about its people, or if it hasn't gotten around to stamping out civil rights yet. It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, socially-minded government stops and the rest of society begins, but it is mainly concerned with Social Welfare, although Religion & Spirituality and Education are on the agenda. The average income tax rate is 43%, but much higher for the wealthy. A large private sector is led by the Basket Weaving industry, followed by Information Technology and Uranium Mining. Citizens can be frequently spotted going about their business stark naked, elections have been outlawed, and the nation is ravaged by daily union strikes. Crime is totally unknown. Apes in chainmail riding tyrannosaurs's national animal is the human, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the bag of marbles.

Last time I joined my nation was called molestingboys I had the vatican flag of course and joined many christan regions offering free education to their children. They declined my offer

So there's entire union strikes where nobody is wearing any clothes. Awesome.

Yeah, it was a promo tool for a book, what was it Jennifer state or something? It was a sort of No Logo dystopia.

I couldnt get it to produce the sort of mix which would reflect my own ideal, you cant have culturally conservative, economically socialist, with free ownership of fire arms and stuff like that.

A lot of what qualifies the country as socialist appeared to be exactly what the fiscal conservatives or capitalists would call socialism, which isnt the same thing as socialism but comes closer the mark of the sorts of measures required for a mass markets and consumer societies or even just decent public services or education and social services. I think socialism had a dozen or more reality checks, it almost became a left wing intergenerational tradition for the reality checks to take place, those professing that sort of thing are or were celebrated by the left, like Orwell etc. The right wing has never had that, its not likely to have it either.

I see it in the UK, the conservative government still regards social services not as professionals at all but something akin to the poor houses in which people made rope and unpicked it and remade it again or in which people climbed upon a massive wheel like hamsters and turned it over and over and over, they've extended that view to more basic services too teaching, fire services, policing and made serious policies on the back of the belief that if it cant be done privately for hard cash it should be done by volunteers for free. The UK has one of the most radically capitalist governments ever to come into existence at the moment and its unelected too, two capitalist parties with votes not enough for them to take office by themselves joined together in order to seize power Bolshevik style.

The mad thing about the nation states website is that its creator actually says that he believes an approximation of social democracy is the best of all possible worlds and the feedback in the form of pluses and minuses for policies you choose should take you in that direction but I think that what he considers social democracy would be in accordance with most conservative democrats or right of centre parties in Europe and not social democracy at all. The US and UK has gone into some sort capitalist wilderness.
