Any invisible nefarious act that is theoretically possible will be assumed by some people to have already taken place, despite obstacles that make it extremely unlikely. It's the basis of conspiracy theory. For instance, it's not exactly a secret that TV and other mass media are capable of transforming culture by virtue of their reach. It's something McLuhan wrote about decades ago. But it's death by a thousand cuts, and they all come from different sources; there's no Orwellian evil genius orchestrating it. Advertising affects the way you think about using products and about what you're entitled to. News producers affect the way you think about events and policy. Reality shows affect the way you think about personality archetypes. Entertainment programs affect the way you think about love and the limits of your lot in life. It seems impossible that the power of this medium could be harnessed to serve a specific interest. But that's not as cool a story.
Yeah, the video was very nonspecific and avoided any real theory of how power operates in our society. Had it done so, it would at least have attempted to provide an answer to the "how could all media uniformly serve a specific interest in the absence of an evil genius guiding everything" problem that you pose.

anyone really watch television anymore? the internet is the big thing and that is what seems to be most under attack as of late. sopa and acta, its annoying. I believe there was a bill that would prevent publishing medical research payed for by tax payers from being published and made available to scientist and docters, some publishing company that would be responsible for releasing the information after year is looking to prevent that from happening. everyone is trying to corner their little place on some avenue and doing this means cutting away the little freedoms we have now or access in doing so and censoring or arresting the things that would normally enable others to pave their way in the world and have their own success because there is now actually things that challenge old practices.

the control, at least right now, is strangling the flow of information.

Yeah, I was about to say something similar, referencing either McLuhan or Orwell in rants about TV is seriously dated.

Seriously? Despite what a whirl around the internet would have you believe, the world is not comprised entirely of 22 year old torrent users.

All experiences, regardless of source, change us. Further, television is a medium, not a specific experience in and of itself. Can you really say that Doctor Who will skew my perception of reality the same way that Dexter would?
I won't deny it changes us, and I won't deny that change isn't always good, but I will say that the majority of messages I see in media are positive. Heroes win, good prevails, and where it doesn't it's considered wrong.
I see no conspiracy here, except a conspiracy of one man to put himself into a lockstep of fear and isolation.
A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions. - Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.

Pretty much only for live sports.
"We grow up thinking that beliefs are something to be proud of, but they're really nothing but opinions one refuses to reconsider. Beliefs are easy. The stronger your beliefs are, the less open you are to growth and wisdom, because "strength of belief" is only the intensity with which you resist questioning yourself. As soon as you are proud of a belief, as soon as you think it adds something to who you are, then you've made it a part of your ego."
