    I've read enough history to know that how a leader comports himself in his personal life often has little bearing on what policies he will support in his professional role. I'd rather have a hypocritical leader who pursues good policy than one with integrity that pursues bad policy. In a democracy like the United States, there is little room for leaders to indulge in personal projects and prejudices. They are mostly concerned with keeping their office, and they'll respond to those incentives accordingly. The particular people in positions of power, and their moral integrity, are far less important than the institutional constraints and incentives they operate in, and that is how it should be. When good governance depends on peoples' benevolence and wisdom, we're all screwed.
    A criticism that can be brought against everything ought not to be brought against anything.
