This brings back memories of Ceausescu. Im not sure bringing footage of his dead body is going to help any cause. Only the photographer's pockets.

I dont think they needed to kill the man when the institution was dead, the frustrated coalition spokespeople on the BBC radio broadcasts sounded like the bolsheviks trying to excuse the shooting of the Romanovs or others talking about how their very existence is a threat to what they're trying to create.

I seriously think that someone should put the breaks on out there, it looks more and more like the place is going to get plunged into perpetual civil war and everyone shooting the shit out of the place for who knows what reason. I was watching them blowing up, shooting and bulldozing structures in Gaddafi's home town which wherent even strategic any longer, it was like something out of the Chinese Cultural Revolution, WTF is wrecking the place going to do?

Although mind you I dont even think that monuments should be torn down in the wake of upheavels and revolutions, they should be let alone to stand and people can visit them as relics of a bygone age, pure history in the past tense.

Would Libya be in better state if he never ruled (by force) that nation for so long?
Did he not suppress extremism in Libya?

We should ask this question before condemning him.

If he hadn't been killed I'm sure he would've used every opportunity a trial afforded him to denounce the West and Israel, thereby winning himself sympathy in a good portion of the non-western world, and probably gaining him immunity from effective punishment. As with Saddam, and Osama.

I don't agree with the death penalty, but it seems like when many nations are involved it's a case of the sooner the better. You can be damn sure, for instance, that if Pakistan had had any say in the matter Osama would be alive and well right now.

Is there really anyone that disputes this? I would be happy to debate that person.

And the thread spirals into the inevitable bleeding-hearts vs. murderous-thugs dichotomous wank session...

    Gaddafi was an evil man.
    Gaddafi is dead.
There's no dispute about either fact.

With that, I depart this thread.

I agree, he ascended to power in a bloodless coup and within the first six years or so, which is about the span of a parliamentary or presidential term in office (two presidential terms?) the living standard of the people had improved dramatically, his ideology was a mix of arab nationalism and some sort of quasi-maoism, the rule by committees part anyway. I know that people will say that it was about the discovery of oil and well, sure, it was but the wealth generated by that could have simply been going abroad or more of it spent on limos for the leader than there was.

There's no question that Gaddafi was el presidenti for life and was becoming increasingly stranger and stranger and stranger, like the Michael Jackson of geopolitics, and his state was responsible for atrocities against its people, whether he personally sanctioned it all or not, and it WAS a police state too. So there's dozens of reasons why it wouldnt have met with foreign/Anglo-American/western approval but I'll be honest, if the guy hadnt engaged in spy games and proxy war with, particularly Britain but also the US, he'd be alive today.

Surely such a sophisticated observation deserves further discussion.
