    Just watched his speech.

I wasn't impressed. Just a bunch of trite and rehearsed garbage. It's like "Recite some bullshit inspiration speech to a fancy school to elicit public adoration" was an item on his to-do list for PR purposes.

And notice that blatant barb he dropped on Windows. Classy.

    Inspiration formula:
    (1) Praise the audience and halfass fake humility
    (2) Come up with some "early/humble beginnings" story, do your best to present a hardship or unusual circumstance.
    (3) Ooh and ahh yourself for taking some "risk"
    (4) "I followed my dream and my intuition"
    (4S) Insert insult to competitor
    (5) Your success as they know it!
    (6) Sprinkle in "bumps in the road"
    (7) "Oh, but I'll never give up! I'm following my dream and my intuition!"
    (8) "FOLLOW YOUR DREAM AND INTUITION"

So, you don't think talking to a bunch of college grads, on their grad day, about how he thought school was BS, and made it anyway, was inspiring of any other message?

Btw I can give a trite message, because I normally hate graduation ceremonies. Didn't even attend my own.

I was looking back on all the time I had spent here, and wondering what to write? What can I say, it wasn't easy. We went through this, and this, but today, we have made it. We walk away from here proud of our accomplishments, and look forward to a new beginning.

    Jobs' version.

Who cares, as you go out there you may find obstacles, you may lose some sense of direction, but if you keep going, the world makes sense. You make sense. Don't rely on what you have learned here, rely on yourself, to know and guide you, where you need to be. When you look back, it will seem so simple, so don't be discouraged by anything. Just do what YOU can do, because in the end, that is all you had.

I very much liked his speech.

I just found out about this today. Here are my thoughts..

    "Steve who?"
"Why are they talking about the apple guy?"
    "Oh..he's dead."
"Make sense, they only ever talk about people when they die."

    So yeah.

My thought on it, right now, is this.

    +1 Bill Gates.

Right. I think you don't know what you're talking about. And I'm probably right.

Yeah, I really don't like this mentality of hero worship we seem to have cultivated. Steve Jobs did well for himself and built a highly profitable company through his salesmanship (and often shadier methods, so I hear.) Bully for him. It sucks when anyone dies of a horrible disease, but I'm not going to go saying that his death is some great loss for civilization. Get a fucking grip. Technology develops incrementally, largely off of the back of previous technology. Steve Jobs just managed to package it really well. Fucking great.
