    Default Do you think the world is getting better?

    Is the world getting better or getting worse? If you are optimistic or pessimistic about the future do you make any kind of connection between that and your political beliefs?

    Quick response.

    This is deliberately open ended before anyone starts a whine about that.

    More good and less evil.

    In the larger scheme of things I like to think things are getting better. My optimism influences my politics to make me more environmentally conscious in my politics than most conservatives (though i'm still not a fan of over regulation) because I think the world will still be here in 500 or 1000 years or more.
    Take the weakest thing in you
    And then beat the bastards with it
    And always hold on when you get love
    So you can let go when you give it

    While this can be argued, the simplest universal truth I have found is that everyone on the planet wants to find happiness. So based on that, along with other conditions behind the concept that aid people to be happy, my answer is yes, the world is getting better.

    The simple answers are:
    greater understanding of ourselves, the universe and it's laws that allow for the advancing of other fields (all through the scientific method);
    longer lifespans due to medical advances allowing greater time in life to positively affect others;
    more freedoms in more places around the world than before (economically and human rights);
    and all of which give people greater opportunities to find their own happiness in themselves and others.

    To prevent some possible questions in advance, yes, I am optimist, and no, I don't believe that this future towards an greater happiness is guaranteed.

    What I mean by the last statement above is that as I have viewed the world it seems that things will continue to advance positively but it will not be easy and like life beforehand, there are challenges that confront each and everyone of us that may hinder us.

    Again, keeping things simple, these things include the variance in economies which leads to instabilities, possibility of killing ourselves (in mass, not just individually), altering the environment negatively enough to kill people around the world, and of course the constant disagreement and warring that prevent us from advancing as a whole.

    Eventually the next ice age will start, which will inevitably reduce the human population and cause suffering. We are here for a blink of the earths eye, so what does it matter if things seem better this year, this decade or this millennium?

    (Note to self: stop watching geology documentaries)

    By the time the next ice age starts, we should have either the technology to have left the planet and begun colonization elsewhere or, less likely, mucked things up enough so that the ice age would be a refreshing winter DEcreasing human suffering

    Yes, of course. We started off with child sacrifice, then we improved to child abuse, then we improved to authoritarian child rearing, and now we are moving into the helping mode of chlld rearing.

    And in the meantime, we have overcome scarcity in developed countries and adopted liberal democracy.

    We have abolished slavery, emancipated women and prosecute child sexual abuse in our criminal courts.

    We defeated not one, but two totalitarian ideologies, National Socialism and Communism, and we are on our way to defeat the third totalitarian ideology of Islam.

    We know our world, from the quantum of the atom to the singularity at the heart of every galaxy.

    We know how each specie, including ourselves, originated with digital accuracy.

    Hey, we have gone to the Moon and we are learning to dance in our own hearts.

    agreed with all except the bolded
    1) as soon as we defeat one dictator, another arises. our next dictatorial regimes we will have to face will be the "global society" (aka the Global Empire) and the New World Order
    2) liberal democracy is a nice idea, but sometimes it is simply a fail. examples include
    - Jim Crow
    - Prohibition of Alcohol
    - Prohibition of Marijuana
    - illegality of gay marriage
    and several others

    in short, I am for liberal democracy within certain limits. the majority does have the right to force it's will on and oppress the minority or tell them how to live their lives. no one has the right to tell another person who they can marry, where they should sit on a bus or whether or not they should wear a friggin seat belt (seriously? THAT'S what our Congressional tax dollars are going toward? I want my money back). the purpose of a government is to PREVENT people from controlling each other, not to authorize it.
