    Default Mysticism->Politics?

    Everything begins in mysticism and ends in politics. - Charles Péguy

    Agree? Disagree? Something else entirely?

    Can you expand on where you think he was coming from when he said that?

    (I don't know anything about him.)

    God.

    Yes, I do, in fact, agree. The majority of presidents are affiliated with a branch of Christianity or talks something about Christianity in some way. The word god is use unsparingly on practically all forms of politics.

    Which is why the founding fathers tried to separate church from state....

    God is there in abortions. God is there when it comes to gay marriage. God is there when it comes to social programs. "God is... freakin' everywhere."

    Everyone can share in the abstract equally, and fully, but once something becomes concrete, it must be divvied up.

    Hmm. I don't know, could mean a lot of things. It sounds like the path of how things manifest. They start in a nebulous place of intents and ideas and have to somehow and politically justify their existence.

    The original context was Peguy's involvement in the Dreyfus Affair, and his disgust with how what started as a noble movement to clear the name of an innoncent man degenerated into an excuse to knee-jerk the military(an institution Peguy always held in high regard). However there is another intended meaning; that high ideals("mysticism") must be put into action("politics"), and Peguy was a staunch advocate of regenerating French politics with the examples of its Medieval saints and Republican heroes.

    Cool, thanks! I figured you must be a big fan.

    (I previously thought your username was something random or personal until I saw the name beside that quote, ha.)

    He's not as well known as he used to be, but I have noticed a certain revival of interest in him in various quarters.
