With all that's happening economically and what not, I don't think state sanctioned marriage between same sexes couples is high on the list of priorities.
BTW, the comment above is not very reflective of my stance in the debate. I'm for it. I hope to see it happen in my life time. The gay community are far more accepting of myself as an individual, than the straight community, and I'm frikin' one of them. As far as I'm concerned the institution of marriage is another main stream society institution designed so people can feel smug and superior to those who are not in the blessed state of state sanctioned union.
Currently submerged under an avalanche of books and paper work. I may come back up for air from time to time.

Marriage shouldn't be able to be given or revoked... it should be something private between consenting adults and have nothing to do with other people. Government shouldn't be involved with it at all.

Right now couples who are married get legal privileges that unmarried couples don't. If you cut the law out of marriage, how would you address that? Would those privileges now be open to anyone? Would they be open to no one? What?

Like Magic says, there are some legal aspects to marriage (such as rights to visit in a hospital, rights for property ownership, etc.) that would have to be determined in any case. Marriage was used as the easiest vehicle to which to attach those rights to. The answer can't just be based on idealism, it's got to take care of the practical nitty-gritty as well.

So yes, the gay marraige rights should be given via the government, that's it's essentially duty.

Um, no, gay marraige isn't 'ever allowed', in most states it's not legal nor officially recognized by the government. Nor can gays just create their own marraige institutions and marry legally, otherwise they would have done so ages ago. The whole reason for why the rights should be given via the government is because currently they don't exist.
    Why?
