Default Should America Cut Foreign Aid?

I was browsing on FB and one of my friends posted this link about Ron Paul

    http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011...id-opposition/

And a lot of people were just focusing on the fact that he is cutting aid for Israel. But its not JUST Israel, its everyone. Posting really negative comments :|

Personally I think we should cut foreign aid. We don't have money as it is and we are struggling ourselves as a country. I don't see what the big deal is! What makes Israel so special that we should completely deny a bill to cut foreign aid? Until we can support ourselves I don't think we should be helping everyone else out, makes us look DUMB. I can't think of a reason other than religion that makes people so upset about this. I'm hoping there is a more logical reason other than religion... anyone want to enlighten me?

Hmm..this is a very complicated thing. First, we like Israel, they are our friends. Second, this isn't easy because it has to do with preventing wars. The world is not as much in harmony as it seems. We could easily revert back to something WWII -ish if the money stops flowing.

i don't think we're helping them out as much as paying them off.

No. U.S. development aid currently stands at 0.16 percent of GDP. It's nothing in the grand scheme of government spending.

Not really being an economics person, I have never quite understood giving money away when we don't have it ourselves, and in fact, owe other people.

Because in times of crisis the first thing to do is cut all support for the poor.

Not all of it, just a lot of it. I am also for cutting down the size of our military, closing overseas bases, and reducing the size of our government as much as possible, the crisis only exists because we spend more then we make. You could tax everyone in the country 100% of their income and we still wont close the gap, we dont have an income problem we have a spending problem. When you're in debt the last thing you do is go open a new credit card.

0.16 percent of 14 trillion$ is not "nothing" in the grand scheme - it's missing the point to compare it to GDP. Compare it to what other things the money could go towards. If my math is correct, that would be $22.5 billion. There are a lot of things you can do with that kind of money.

I'm not in the US though, so I don't really have an opinion on whether it's a bad idea or not.
