Default Cracked has it right again

The main problem is that nothing in science says that "homophobia" is even a thing. It's not listed among the actual phobias. It's more of a slang term that gets used in popular culture to describe a huge range of attitudes, from people who have strong moral objection to homosexuality due to religious beliefs or upbringing, to people who physically find homosexual sex disgusting, to people who brim with an inexplicable rage toward gays.

In all fairness I can't make a decision on this issue without seeing in the very least seeing the data Cracked used to make my own determination. Even if what they say happens to be technically true or not (i.e. " on the general issue whether homophobes are or have a tendency to be secretly closet homosexuals". In my experience "homophobes" I have met are the types of people who seem unusually interested in what another's sexual orientation is or might be; most often in the pejorative. Most often they would call me or others "gay" when someone either annoyed them or where good victims to bully.

That being said I do however believe that racists on the other hand secretly believe they are a member of the race they hate and that all people who deny being an alcoholic are alcoholics in denial. ;-)

The cracked article is suggesting that not everything labelled as homophobic is and that homophobia isnt even a thing, its just a pop culture label.

Your finally paragraph sort of sums up the point too.

What are you celebrating here exactly and why does this post qualify as a discussion-worthy contribution to "Politics, History, and Current Events"? Serious Qs.

    Exactly.

I don't even know what is the point of this whole thing. It seems to have two agendas; (1) to point out that the Armoured Closet Gay trope is not always true and (2) that homophobia is not a diagnosable psychological condition. In response to the first agenda, we can all collectively say "duh!" To the second, who ever said it was a proper psychological diagnosis? And who cares if it is or is not?

After reading what happened in the closet gay study, I wonder if they controlled for previous exposure to pornography. From what I understand, there is a correlation between conservatism/religiosity and both being against homosexuality and being against porn in general. If that's the case, then that would likely skew the results since reactions to porn tend to be greater when you first start watching.

    A thoughtful consideration.

I'll be the first to say that Lark's opinions on this topic are well-known and color his motivation for starting this thread. That said...

We could, if in fact it weren't so widely believed and used as an ad hominem to dismiss people.

To the second, who ever said it was a proper psychological diagnosis? And who cares if it is or is not?
It matters because the term 'homophobe' is used as a stick, the same as 'racist' and 'anti-semite'. Unfounded credibility will only assist those using it as a slur.

This thread is being moved back and is open for discussion, but insults and attacks ARE NOT going to be tolerated at all. You should be capable commenting on the Cracked article and/or the subject of homophobia without attacking the other posters.

If you are incapable of doing that, you will find yourself removed from the thread.
