Default Facebook giving too much freedom of expression!!!!

Facebook is reportedly negotiating with Chinese partners to launch the social network in China, where it is currently blocked from use.

But expanding into China requires abiding by Chinese laws, which require web companies to censor everything from search results to status updates.

Though Facebook says it is dedicated to making the world a "more open and connected" place--a mission that clashes with the Chinese government's frequent crackdowns on Internet expression--a spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal that it is considering censoring the content that appears on its site in nations abroad.

While he did not mention China specifically, Facebook lobbyist Adam Conner told the Journal, "Maybe we will block content in some countries, but not others."

(Facebook's director of international communications noted only that the company was "studying and learning about China" but has so far "made no decisions about if, or how, we will approach it.")

Facebook has remained relatively mum on the use of the site by protestors in Tunisia, Egypt and beyond as a tool for organizing demonstrations.

Conner suggested that the company may be bringing "too much" freedom of expression in some nations.

Nothing wrong with freedom of expression. No matter how annoying, political, or TMI it may be.

They will cower and set aside their own principals just like google did, and do exactly what the China government asks because there is too much money to be made.
Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

This reminds me of people saying the reasonsing that a Russian company bought Live Journal a few years back was to supervise their Russian bloggers, because LJ is one of the most popular blogging sites there, and they have the highest number of members on LJ outside of the U.S. (seriously, even including U.K. and Canada).

However, facebook as an American company blocking content to provide their services to other countries...hmmm...I mean, what is worse? Making facebook completely unavailable to these people, or censoring some of the content to the government's liking?

I don't think the Internet should be censored at all, though. Freedom of information, et al.

Meh, certainly wouldn't be the first major corporation to make extreme changes to appease the Chinese government so they have the necessary permissions needed to allow their services to be used in an attempt to capitalize on the untapped market there.

We can only hope that what has happened in Egypt and is happening in Libya and Tunisia will happen in China as well. Deus vult.

I dont think that Facebook should be more powerful than a national government which has a means in place for citizens to express their will on issues such as censorship no.
