Officially 200+ but there are unconfirmed reports of police in the northeast finding a couple of hundred bodies washed up on the beaches.

Unfortunately the best to hope for in a disaster like this is that there are "only" a few hundred dead rather than thousands. Very very sad.

"BBC live" shows some very graphic videos from the field that show the magnitude of the disaster.

Indeed. I can't begin to fathom hundreds of people, who were alive just a few hours ago, being killed semi-simultaneously by a great wave...

Nature is a cruel, brutal force...

There are a lot of people missing according to reports. There were a few more quakes in the areas around here last night, was woken up by my phones earthquake alarm. Fires and the tsunami have taken a lot of lives.

It's being said it's one of Japan's most powerful earthquakes - measuring 8.8. We're gonna have to keep a look out at the aftermath.

This is so sad.... I woke up this morning to see my mom freaked out because my step-dad is in Guam, but Guam is fine & the tsunami warning has even been lifted there. Strangely enough, I have an aunt on the northern coast of Cali who is under tsunami warning right now also, as it reverberated across the Pacific Ocean (and one person actually was killed already by a giant wave)....

As for Japan, last report I hear was around 200 dead, 700 missing, and predictions of at least 1000 being the final death toll.
Often a star was waiting for you to notice it. A wave rolled toward you out of the distant past, or as you walked under an open window, a violin yielded itself to your hearing. All this was mission. But could you accomplish it? (Rilke)
