This is not the first quake, there was one a few days ago.

Miyagi prefecture has over 2 million people. This isn't going to be pretty.

Evacuation ordered for those living within 3 km of a nuclear reactor in Fukushima as a precaution. Apparently the automatic shutdown mechanism didn't work.

Update : The shutdown worked but the cooling system is busted so the plant is still 'hot'

Wolfy, whereabouts are you in Japan? Glad you are ok.

I was in Japan in December, my second visit. My friends who I was visiting are near Osaka. I was pretty scared this morning when a local friend texted me that there had been a massive quake and tsunami in Japan, before I went online to see exactly where it was. Osaka was fine, but they felt it - my friend's office building was evacuated. And it's that far away, so this was MASSIVE. I know a few people around Tokyo/Yokohama area too and so far have heard from a few who are fine - which I think the vast majority round there are.

The directly affected areas are another story. I cannot believe the footage and pics. I don't really want to watch/look too much as it is pretty distressing, though I'm having a hard time tearing myself away from updates. I guess it will take a while to know the death toll, but the latest news stories that a boat with 100 people was probably swept away, and a train - a train! - is unaccounted for, are bad. Thoughts and prayers with Japan.

It must have been pretty scary where you are too...

They've now found several hundred dead on the coastline. Too sad.

I can't believe this is the 5th largest earthquake ever, and some of the aftershocks are in the 5-6 range.

If there is anyone else in an affected area over there, please let us know you're ok!

Yeah, the "aftershocks" are more like an "everyday" big, scary earthquake...
