If our government legalised cannabis then we could sue the government for damage caused. The payouts would be so great that even a trillion dollar economy like ours couldn't afford it.

In the light of the evidence of the damage caused by cannabis to users, our government couldn't afford to legalise cannabis.

However is they did pass legislation legalising cannabis in the light of our present evidence of personal damage, they could be sued by individuals for damages in our Courts.

I'd be surprised if you could sue the government for doing something legal, which it would be by definition at that point.

The Australian government is definitely responsible for distributing alcohol though.

Handing out licenses, unbanning (a.k.a. legalising), loosening laws and what not. Has anyone sued them for damages because of it?

    Who legalized alcohol? The Brits?
"We grow up thinking that beliefs are something to be proud of, but they're really nothing but opinions one refuses to reconsider. Beliefs are easy. The stronger your beliefs are, the less open you are to growth and wisdom, because "strength of belief" is only the intensity with which you resist questioning yourself. As soon as you are proud of a belief, as soon as you think it adds something to who you are, then you've made it a part of your ego."
