I'm not entirely sure if that's a bad thing. The West has failed.

Western secularism is not perfect, but I think it's closer to enlightenment than other cultures.

Might be, but within many cultures it seems to be widely accepted to punish women through beating them, and educated people tend to be more liberal and progressive when it comes to social values and more secularized at that.
Of course, just because someone's got an education it doesn't mean it can't happen.
I'm talking about the middle class here, not the upper class. The latter has been known to contain truckloads of family trouble wherever you go.

About terrorists.. So whose freedom were Terry Nichols, Tim McVeigh and Eric Rudolph fighting for?? Who were their victims again??

I mean no offense really.. and I hope I am missing the joke..
Like Oberon said, i'm not american and if you have read many of my posts you'd see that i'm not at all fond of your corrupt government, a lot of your federal laws as well as various ridiculous state laws, i'm aware of your police problem etc.
It's also fully understandable, but regrettable in a way, that you have homegrown terrorism.
They're going about it all wrong, though. Shooting or blowing up innocent people isn't exactly effective.
Wikileaks' method is effective, if anything. I hope they focus some more on the backroom deals of senators, governors and politicians.
We all know Bush was owned by the oil industry, pro-zionism lobbyists and who knows what...
I wonder what Obama's deal is, really. I bet that somewhere, somehow, someone has made him a rich man.
It's how most systems work in decadent cultures all around the world, to some extent here as well, even if people who engage in it seldom remain in office for long.

    I take no offense, arc.

I'd really like an elaboration this.

And this definitely. Do you mean the historical enlightenment or enlightenment per se?

    This will not end well...
But it will at least be poetic, I suppose...

Hmm... But what if it does end well?
Then I suppose it will be a different sort of poetry, a preferable sort...
A sort I could become accustomed to...

Multi-culturalism has worked here for a very long time, and as I write we are in the middle of our Multi-cultural Festival. However things do seem to be changing. We hear voices saying not all cultures are equal. We see low reinforced concrete walls around all our government buildings to protect against suicide bombers. And another well known voice has called for Multi-racialism to replace Multi-culturalism.

But it will probably depend on what happens elsewhere in the world. Will the Muslim Brotherhood succeed in taking over Egypt? Will the Islamists succeed in letting off a couple of dirty nuclear bombs in USA cities?

Perhaps Multi-culturalism is the Romantic dream of equality - for if all individuals are equal, surely all cultures are equal. But it seems the Romantic dream is dying.

I feel sad seeing the Romantic Movement coming to an end and worry what will replace it.

We have though seen there is a dark side to Romanticism and perhaps we need to refresh ourselves by dipping into the Enlightenment.
