Yep, one of my friends who pays far more attention to national and world events than I (which wouldn't be hard to do ;-) told me about this in November, and his conversation ended up morphing into talking about pre-WWII Germany.

Paranoia? I hope. Obviously I hope we wouldn't ever go down that path. But yes...it is a slippery slope. Nothing good could possibly come of it, and I don't really trust human nature when it comes to group mentality and what those in power deem must be done. And it's not like we've 'evolved' over the centuries. And stuff we hear about happening in other parts of the world could *easily* happen here at some point.

    Erm...time for happy thoughts again!

Guantanamo is one of the issues causing big diplomatic problems for the US... those of you are domestic residents may have little idea just how badly it is viewed by the rest of the "developed" world.

Torture and the death sentence, locking people up for years without charge. Oh dear.

....and then criticising other countries and telling them they should join the freedom of democracy. Oh dear.

The 'freedom of democracy' crap makes me go for oh so many reasons. But, then, I'm not 'patriotic'.

I think there was talk about sending 'second tier' terrorists to the federal prison in my town. From the road it looks like the new construction is pretty big. It is definitely accessible by rail but I think they usually use bus or 'con-air.'

Edit: still scanning article. The new construction could not house millions of people. A few hundred to a thousand would be my guess.
“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.”

Its an ideological, emotional, "spin job." I place no credence in propaganda.

According to diplomat and author Peter Dale Scott, the KBR contract is part of a Homeland Security plan titled ENDGAME, which sets as its goal the removal of "all removable aliens" and "potential terrorists."

What could the government be contemplating that leads it to make contingency plans to detain without recourse millions of its own citizens?

Yeah...I'm certainly not taking the article at face value, but that said, it still alarms me. Even if it's part of the Homeland Security Plan (ha! Doesn't mean I necessarily agree w/ said organization), I think it's the phrase 'potential terrorists', and how that is defined, that is the potential slippery slope.

What could the government be contemplating that leads it to make contingency plans to detain without recourse millions of its own citizens?
Oh, I agree. It certainly seems ludicrous and silly right now - I mean, obviously nothing largescale would be implemented now or in the very near future. It just wouldn't fly. But I still think anything can happen when you factor time into the equation, and gradual policy changes...as well as unforseen future world events.

Of course not that anything would ever happen, but I guess I don't see it as that far-fetched, given world history. :rolli: And still, the very existance of large facilities, and the very concept of it, alarms me - no matter what purpose the Homeland Security office supposedly says they are for (and I don't take government offical words at face value either).

I wouldn't worry. The population is way different than it was in those time periods. The oldest members of the population are baby boomers and slightly before like myself who marched against the injustices of racial discrimination. Can you imagine a gov't trying to put us away? or anyone unjustly?LOL We turned the status quo upside down. And the younger generation ain't gonna let it happen either. I'm not worried and see how the gov't was unprepared for 9/11 and New Orleans so, I guess, in thinking about what to do with all the illegals while awaiting deportation, it doesn't seem such a bad idea to me. I included the quote because the author jumps from calling "aliens" and "potential terrorists" ... "citizens." When I see those kinds of jumps, I'm suspect.

Well, it seems from that article like the government is giving itself more raw power that could potentially be misused. Even if this doesn't happen soon, it's likely that if it's unchecked, something will eventually happen. After all, "absolute power corrupts absolutely." It's only a question of how long it will take for someone corrupt to obtain and use this power.

Unless, of course, we can convince the government to restrain itself... which doesn't sound like it would be easy.
