On the same website, 59% of the male members claim that their favorite organ has a length of 16-199.99cm. :yim_rolling_on_the_

That link summarizes an enquiry among the users of a libertarian webside. Only 46 members reported their IQ. With 6 members claiming to be over 150 that makes 13,04% of the participants above an IQ of 150. No matter what scale was used (or if all members used the same scale) this is highly dubious. Even on the Catell less than 2% are above 150 and on the Wechsler only 0.13% are over 145, let alone over 150. In any system, that website must be frequented by geniuses.

You will probably meet your friends among your own social circle. If you are a student, they are likely to be student. That influences the average IQ in your environment. And since knowledge of and sympathy for libertarian philosophy is partially linked to access to education and money, I wouldn't be suprised if there really was a certain correlation. But that doesn't mean that they are "right" because their followers have higher IQs. It just means that those favoring every man for himself and no taxation tend to have a good education and a lot of money to tax...suprise, suprise!

199.99cm? Surely it's supposed to be 19.9. That does sound high, but 16cm certainly does not. Isn't that 6 1/4 inches? I am sure there is some puffery going on there, but I know I fall in the lower part of that range.

The majority of committed libertarians I know are high-IQ/low-to-average EQ individuals. Again, the numbers sound inflated, but libertarians do have the highest percentage of postgraduate degrees of the major American political ideologies. IQ is notoriously hard to nail down, but I am pretty sure the median libertarian would have as high or higher an IQ than the median liberal or conservative. We aren't all geniuses, but you almost never find a below-average libertarian.

I didn't come from a moneyed background and found libertarianism on my own in my early teens. My parents were not very political middle-class, Catholic Democrats. I was very unusual for being political in high school, and I didn't really meet anyone else who gave a shit about politics until I got to an Ivy League university. The vast majority of college students were decidedly NOT libertarian, either.

As to your reasoning of "every man for himself and no taxation," why wouldn't more major captains of industry and Hollywood stars and executives and professional athletes be libertarians? For every one Koch brother or Drew Carey, there are hundreds of Jeff Immelts or Goldman Sachs managers or Sean Penns. The majority of libertarians I know personally are middle- and upper-middle-class intellectuals who are stubborn and passionate about things like economics and information technology, not the wealthiest 1%. I think it's more that higher-IQ individuals simply feel more comfortable in a society that affords maximum choices in all areas of life, while lower-IQ individuals are more likely to believe in a need for social and economic control. A lot of my smart liberal friends end up showing a more libertarian streak the more they learn about economics and fiscal policy.

Probably because social conservatism is stupid and destructive and the only people who believe it are people incapable of rational thinking and who rely on authority figures and the past to dictate their sense of right and wrong. Economic "conservatism" (Free-market, etc) is better in that respect, but I don't know of any libertarians who would identify themselves as "conservatives".

If you tested the IQs of extremists like National Socialists or Communists they'd probably do better than both liberals and conservatives, simply because independent thinkers tend to be attracted to unorthodox political views. There are too many variables to draw an accurate conclusion. I don't think this study is particularly well done and nor does it really say anything interesting. The author seems like a pompous tool.

I was responding to someone else's post about a libertarian website. Is that OK? And who are you?

I think this might have been true in the 1930s, but I doubt that American Nazis and Communists would score that high circa-2011.
