I agree that marriage is better than one-night stands. However, as I explained earlier, the essence of marriage is the union of male and female for purposes of procreation and upbringing of children.
There are straight people who are in loving, monogamous relationships who choose not to have children, or postpone childbearing, or choose to only have one child. Those people clearly see sex as serving a valid purpose in expressing love, affection, and sharing pleasure, which incidentally helps people to maintain emotional and physical health. Sex serves a lot of wonderful, healthy purposes besides procreation.

The state is seperated from church, therefore, the state can sanction whatever the hell it wants, as long as the people vote for it.

None of which actually refutes what I argued. I even addressed the issue of sterile couples earlier in the thread.

Indeed it does, but those are secondary to the main purpose of procreation. Otherwise you're just engaging in what the Greeks called porn(ie non-procreative sex). Does the state really need to officially recognise and sanction porn? If so, why?

So if the people vote against gay marriage that's perfectly alright? This is just might makes right.

BTW, I didn't mention anything about church and state relations.

Are you a high-tech monk? Also, is that Thomas Aquinas in your avatar?

No I'm a lay Catholic. Yes it is St. Thomas. What does this have to do with gay marriage?

I was going to propose to you, but now that you are not a monk, all my hopes for scandalous fun suddenly vanish.

Sorry to spoil the fun. In anycase it would've had to be a celibate relationship.
