Default Gun specific issues - Arizona shooting

In an attempt to keep the Gifford shooting thread contained and in control I'm creating this thread. This would be a good place for questions and conversations regarding guns and gun law, access of the mentally ill to firearms, background checks and screening.

    Such as:
Was the gun used in the shooting illegal?

No. The gun used was a Glock 19 pistol. It was loaded with a high capacity magazine that holds 33 rounds. The (now) standard magazine holds ~15. The assault weapons ban (recently expired) banned this type of high capacity magazine and limited it to 10 rounds.

    Discuss away, please play nice.
Don't know how much it'll bend til it breaks.

I find it strange that modern societies allow guns for civilians at all.

I think there is a strong demand for them so the government allows it.

Does anyone know about the gun screening process? What is involved?

People say Americans are gun happy cowboys, not a lot of Americans take offense at the accusation. I'm not really well versed with the issues, but I live in a part of the country where gun culture is very strong. I don't feel unsafe at all knowing that the guy next to me can legally conceal carry a firearm.

But, it is disturbing that Gifford was able to get ahold of one legally,

It is interesting to note that there have been two recent events--Arizona, Virginia, in which a mentally ill (undiagnosed?) has been able to legally obtain a weapon and kill with it.

It is easy--very easy to get a gun illegally, though.

I have strong desires for this thread to remain a discussion, a conversation. I'd like to hear many viewpoints, as long as people are respectful of each other. Please, keep that devil tail in your pants, eh? ::

It IS, however quite a foreign sentiment. In my mind, it suggests greater protection by (and trust in) the police and military (ie non civilians). There are a lot of ways I don't think we are there in the US.

Don't worry, I was being ironic. I too am European and that was my way of saying that I actually share nolla's view.
