You will be surprised, but possessing a gun does not automatically shield you from harm.

Also, the likelihood that the burglar carries a guns decreases with day the new laws are in effect.

If one wants to ban guns in the US, there are three big practical problems with doing so:-

    1. A lot of people there see it as an intrinsic right of being human. Their response will be violent.
    2. The two bordering nations are Canada and Mexico. Making gun smuggling almost as easy as drug smuggling. (+ unique geography makes it even easier)
    3. There are a lot more practical uses for guns than in most other developed nations. Large areas have genuine wildlife threats quelled with guns, and others rely on hunting for food.

It would still remove the easiest method of acquiring guns illegally, which is by stealing, borrowing or buying them from someone who obtained them legally, but it is still worth considering the US as a special case.

Nothing is 100% effective in shielding you from harm.

Also, the likelihood that the burglar carries a guns decreases with day the new laws are in effect.
Criminals prey on the vulnerable, and a threat of a fine and imprisonment upon discovery and conviction is not nearly as effective as the immideate threat of getting a face full of lead.
Listen to me, baby, you got to understand, you're old enough to learn the makings of a man.

Perhaps, in that case, people should put signs saying 'We have loads of lead!' in their windows.

What works for Europe, works for Europe.

What works for the US, works for the US.

Just because other countries enjoy differing laws, does not automatically mean that those same laws would work, or could even be reasonably applied in the US.

If you are going to argue for gun control, give us reasons it would work here, don't tell us about your supposedly "enlightened" situation over in Europe.

Should we not be allowed to defend ourselves.

Should we just accept that if we are robbed we should just let them have our goods, because it is not our place to defend ourselves?

In my parents neighborhood there have been several armed break ins, and I was almost robbed in a gas station at three in the morning.

Do I not have the right, to protect myself?

People love gun control up until the point that not having a gun gets their whole family killed.

Is it at all conceivable for you that one day people should not be allowed to carry guns?

When you reject the possibility, then there is really no point in arguing with you. Is gun love part of your religion?
