You can't kill anyone with an unloaded gun. (Unless it's used to beat someone to death.) Every person I know who owns a gun, keeps the ammo in a completely separate location. I read a story about a man who accidentally ran over his own child, backing out of his driveway.

    Maybe we should ban cars.

Guns are dangerous, they make killing so easy. If you need to hurt each other, use baseball bats.

Lets see, studies by medical scholars (who confine their studies to officiially reported instances) predicts a low need, while studies by criminologists (who are in a better scholarly position on this issue) say that guns are utilized for defensive purposes up to 2.5 million times a year...I think I'll listen to the latter, thank you. This issue is a lot like the rape statistics, which consistently reveal highly disparate findings between recorded instances and reproducable survey responses.

Guns are also equalizers; a criminal with a baseball bat is likely to have a greater advantage over a victim with a baseball bat than is a a criminal with a gun over a victim with a gun. While its foolish to for gun-owners to neglect safety and marksmen training, it takes less 'practice' to use guns effectively than to use other weapons effectively. Ponder the personal and political consequences of this disparity...

And as for as maximizing safety is concerned, it probably makes more sense to ban backyard swimming pools than to ban guns; at least guns are more than just luxery items.

That said, I'm actually fairly open, in principle, toward greater regulation of high-capacity weapons, but in practice am very wary of messing with the 2nd Amendment for fear that gun-control advocates will use the opportunity to take things too far in the other direciction, much like people who only support abortion up to the 2nd or third month are leery about overturning Roe v. Wade for the same reason

One of the key tactics of tyrannical regimes which come to power such as Hitter's Germany and Stalin's Russia is further limiting speech freedoms and taking away the guns.

    Stalinism and Nazi Germany?

I'd say all Western European countries, Australia, and Canada are a far cry from all of those and still have some gun restrictions.

Apparently Spamtar's one of the paranoid.

But that's the thing, you can't just put someone therapy and whatnot for something he or she -might- do in the future.

What we could do is incoorperate a form of guidance in schools that aim to guide and help youngsters find a decent place to fit in and be themselves. Rather than having them try to find that place by themselves with all its consequences.
Oh no, we can't help our mentally ill more than we already do. That would be Socialism!
