It's the fact that killing others whom one disagrees with is not a basic human right that so vexes the original subject of this thread.

So how do we keep guns out the hands of people who think as he does?

Frankly, Marm, with as many guns available to be bought or borrowed, background checks as shallow or avoidable, NRA and gun lovers as loud and influential as they are, I honestly don't think it can be done in the short term. Limiting the power of those weapons is, perhaps, an attainable goal that can still save lives, if not everyone.

My comment about suicide wasn't really related to anything in this thread. I just find that bit of information very interesting.

    My apologies.

    We shoot their hands off.

    This will not end well...
But it will at least be poetic, I suppose...

Hmm... But what if it does end well?
Then I suppose it will be a different sort of poetry, a preferable sort...
A sort I could become accustomed to...

I don't really buy the whole "the black market will take over if we restrict it" argument. There's a limited number out there and probably 99% of all the illegal guns in the US were originally bought legally. If you stop more getting out there in the first place (by restricting legal sales and taking illegal sales seriously) and really make an effort to crack down on present illegal gun ownership, surely the numbers will get under control. Basically the legal system is too lax in this regard at present

In NZ hand guns are severely restricted and criminals have such trouble even getting hold of illegal ones, people commit bank robberies with air guns and rusty knives (god, I know how lame that sounds but I'm not kidding ). Consequently, the government is now cracking down on high powered air guns and knife crime.

The reaction in these emotionally dramatic events are always disturbing and usually some utterly illogical demagoguery inspired reaction occurs. 9-11 for example mades one realize America is not so far from becoming as hysterical as Nazi Germany.

Most likely the result will be a further limitation of the general public civil liberties. Particularly free speech and gun rights. One of the key tactics of tyrannical regimes which come to power such as Hitter's Germany and Stalin's Russia is further limiting speech freedoms and taking away the guns.

Really, both fascisim and socialism, so known, aren't that different in that respect. They both emerge at the same time and always with each other in the face of cultural and societal crisis and breakdown. Both in their own way need their witch hunts and sacrifices.

It's unfortunate that both gun ownership and gun control arguments have become based on fear. Each side is swinging at their fears even though both view points were inspired in love (which is why both sides are sure of themselves).

People are afraid, we are all of us trying to make a world without our fear, which is that which we see in other people. Neither of us wants the other to control us, and we have little trust for each other. But even that doesn't appear to be the enemy. A culture seems to become stressed out any time it's sense of identity is challenged, and how can human interaction not challenge identities? If there is growing up to do, time will bring it about, so that all this conflict is, in a way, a necessary part of our human experience and self-development.

Guns are illegal here and people still seem to aquire them. Granted, not as easily as in America, but it's still possible.

So rather than trying to make guns illegal so crazy people don't abuse them, I think it's much more important to find a way to localize and help the crazies before they go wrong.

But that's the thing, you can't just put someone therapy and whatnot for something he or she -might- do in the future.

What we could do is incoorperate a form of guidance in schools that aim to guide and help youngsters find a decent place to fit in and be themselves. Rather than having them try to find that place by themselves with all its consequences.

    We shoot their hands off.
I lived in Arizona for many years. One of the funniest conversations I ever had was with a Scottsdale cop. We were talking about crime and he said the reason there wasn't crime in my neighborhood was because so many people own guns, the criminals don't want to get their heads blown off. We had a very well-known gun club in Scottsdale (2nd largest in the country) and people view guns very differently there. If you Google Scottsdale gun club, the second link down is machine gun rentals. Now, that may sound shocking to some, but not in Scottsdale. No one would even bat an eye at such a thing.

"Hey, wanna go rattle off a few rounds and then have margaritas?"
    "Sure!"

    Context matters.

I walked into McDonald's for a cheeseburger and a fella was wearing a gun on his hip. So what?

SCOTTSDALE, AZ - Walk into Scottsdale Gun Club on any given night, and you’ll find a bustling business.

In fact, since Arizona eased restrictions on concealing and carrying firearms, a number of firearms dealers report sales are on the rise.

Criminals are far more frightened of the granny with a S&W airlight in her purse than they are of the cops.
