My first reaction. Of course getting a flue vaccine every season when you do not suffer from an unsually impaired immunal system is mostly bullshit, but a lot of that fear of vaccination sounds cultural to me (stronger in America than in Europe) and even though, as I said, a certain skepticism is always healthy, the whole thing smells of luddism. Then again I might be biased, I got my first vaccines from my dad (don't worry, back then he did that every day as a GP) and have learned to appreciate them as a blessing for humanity. Exceptions don't disprove the rule of thumb.

We haven't proven that they don't give people telepathic powers, either.

You're right, we haven't. Did someone start a thread stating we have?
"We grow up thinking that beliefs are something to be proud of, but they're really nothing but opinions one refuses to reconsider. Beliefs are easy. The stronger your beliefs are, the less open you are to growth and wisdom, because "strength of belief" is only the intensity with which you resist questioning yourself. As soon as you are proud of a belief, as soon as you think it adds something to who you are, then you've made it a part of your ego."

I thought the idea was that you do it to reduce the chance of being a vector by which the disease spreads to others who might not have as healthy an immune system due to age or other factors...

Only if you work in the health sector, as a kindergardener or in a retirement home. At least that's how it is handled over here. People with weakened defense systems and those handling them.

On the other hand, my sister, who is a virologist, recommended a vaccination against swine flue because she thought it might become a serious issue. Turned out is didn't. Fewer victims from that than from other strands of flue that season. Nevertheless I am glad to have her professional view everytime the media predict the next apocalypse.

    No, I'm not angry.
I'm sardonic all the time, don't take it personally.

And in empirical fields lack of evidence is taken as evidence against a hypothesis.

    Presumptuous, human bias, etc.
