    It's an urban myth I am sure..

    My point is .. combustion from fossil fuels is not the only possibility for automation.
    I am sure there are many others, some which will be just as efficient and much less a pollutant.
    But as long as there is big money in oil, oil will rule the day. If you know your stuff, oil is not going anywhere, anytime soon.

    Please don't tell me you're talking about that debunked pseudoscientific abiotic oil theory?

    Fischer-tropsch = Expensive
    Renewables = Expensive
    Nuclear = Expensive
    Produced Oil = Expensive (eventually)

    Take your pick. As ever, one will be the cheapest and that will be the most prevalent.

    Water will also be an issue.

    I'm more worried about certain irreplaceable/function specific metals.

    ^^^^ This is why I think we'll move to solar in the end once the storage/distribution/efficiency tech gets there. The sun puts out excess energy that isn't used, and all it will require is surface area. It's what life runs on already.

    My theory, we're all doomed. The only realistic possibility to save ourselves is if we switch to fusion power on a global scale as quickly as possible. But I think that will take a while, in the mean time there's fission, but for obvious (and nevertheless retarded) reasons (Chernobyl, Three Mile Island) it fell out of grace with people who are to short-sighted to think on a global scale.

    1. Peak oil rings too much like all the other global catastrophes I've heard about for me to get my dander up about it. If I worried about every asteroid, chemical or nuclear holocaust, etc. I would have killed myself a long time ago. I think this type of fear is typical of people who feel suspicion about the larger world. And those who feel a need to control their environment.

    2. It seems plausible. That's the problem with all these things. They always SEEM plausible. Who knows. Maybe it is. The fact is, you can't do a damn thing about it. So, sha na na nana. Live for today. And just trust that tomorrow you'll be okay, etc.

    We will run out of oil this century.

    If we don't get our (US) energy portfolio diversified... the world is going to be in for one hell of a ride when the wars for the last puddles of the stuff erupt.
