George Carlin did a bit on the 10 commandments, he said "coveting thy neighbors goods" drives the economy lol.

I think this makes absolute sense. It goes back to a thread of Darwinism. If the poor concentrate on the fact that they were poor they'd miss the opportunity to achieve anything that may have appeared when they were longing and die, if they have no other resources to plug from. The only flaw is what Tac pointed out. The motivation to actually achieve has to be there and if it isn't, well that's another sociological problem (perhaps Psychological), for a thread that I'm sure has already been created. Back to the translation. When the rich attain their power they have the chance to flash it around as if their shit doesn't stink. Envy is as he stated before linked towards Si, how you felt in the past. If you are poor and linger in it you miss the chance to change your status. I believe this may be what you mean by this. I don't know. Envy is brought out by the Greed of others, and so it is a byproduct, with a distinctly different face from Greed though.

People are envious, not economic systems.

Economic systems are created by people. Econonomic systems aren't rocks or raindrops.

When you're talking about capitalism, it might as well be a raindrop. It's not created by regulation, it's what naturally occurs when people are left to their own devices. People buy and sell, they start businesses, they make investments. That's capitalism. Any envy that maybe be contained therein is the result of human nature, and nothing else.

ORLY? Is that why earlier societies were dominated by feudalism, oligarchies, monarchies, and religious rule?

Also, North American Native tribes didn't really seem to practice capitalism, either.

I'm really looking for why you imagine capitalism is a cold hard fact like water is wet and rocks are hard.

Let me see if I understand your position correctly.

North american tribes were not capitalist and were free of envy.

If you don't make the latter assertion, I'm not sure why you're so insistent on envy being intrinsic to capitalism.

People are people. Envy, hatred, anger, all of those things are built in to who we are. How we exchange goods is a totally separate issue.
