I think it's bull shit. Spare the house, settle the $75 collection after the fact.

Fire-fighting is a public good, not a right. If the governing authority declines to provide the service themselves (directly or indirectly), then unequal access to such services does not constitute a rights violation, just shitty government. That said, putting out fires is a very important public good as well as matter of public safety for all, so the policy in question is just stupid; as a condition of providing the service, the fire-fighters should be legally obligated to put out all fires, and then charge non-participants for the full expenses-plus a fee-afterwards.

So, I couldn't resist mentioning that of course Glenn Beck had to say that what the firefighters did was the right thing to do, and being Glenn Beck, he could not stop there, but had to discuss the terrible, broader implications of what would happen if we let people get fire protection without paying the fee.

Here's one of many articles mentioning this: 'No pay, no spray': Glenn Beck defends the firefighters

This seems to be another statement in Beck's and like-minded commentators' ongoing diatribe against the supposed evils of collective good. These things give me a surreal feeling sometimes. I can't believe the kind of stuff Beck says passes for mainstream credibility in the USA now.

I agree with the notion that life and safety comes first, then penalize him later.

I imagine if the neighbors didn't pay, then they would come and watch an even bigger fire.
Yet I'm sure there are plenty of woods around there. Now you're talking about a potential forest fire, and even if they come and try to keep it from spreading, since they are not putting out the source of the fire, the sparks/embers will continue floating off, starting fires all over, and now you will have to be calling in fire companies from all over, and water spraying helicopters, etc. and other people properties (including those who paid) along with acres of countryside being destroyed, and we could have had a major national news issue.

Events like this will be commonplace if Libertarians ever come to power. This should be a good learning moment for all those who propose anti-tax Libertarian policies.

The South Fulton Fire Department ingloriously made the same point, turning on the hoses when the fire spread to the field of a neighbor who was, yes, in good standing.
I love how they waited until his shit actually caught fire before they stopped it. Nice to know that the $75 doesn't cover them preventing a fire, only them putting one out

And I mean, seriously. They couldn't have put the fire out and then charged him $75? Ambulances do it. Nobody pays an ambulance fee before they need an ambulance. They pay it afterwards.

    Which is why

The conservative commentator Glenn Beck insisted the issue is not one of “compassion, compassion, compassion,” but of paying the $75. Putting out the fire absent the annual fee would have left the Cranicks “sponging off” neighbors who had paid, he said, and invited others to shirk their fees.
    is just fucking stupid.

They're already sponging off each other if they're paying a fee for something they may or may not need. That's how Socialism works -- everybody puts in money, and only a few of those people who put in money will need to use the money for what it was put in for. That way, everybody's paying for other peoples' needs.

If they really wanted to make it fair, they'd only make them pay once they needed the firefighters, and not beforehand.

But hey, lack of compassion is a better political ideology than actually making sense, so kudos to Glen Beck on yet again being the guiding light towards ignorance in the name of freedom!

Actually, in hindsight, this is an excellent method to solve the oversaturation of the housing market.

So I say we fire all the firefighters in the name of salvaging the economy!

The only problem I have is that they didn't even offer to put it out if he paid the fee.

    *update*
In this case, however, it is as if the fire department wanted to make an example of these people. As stated earlier, the neighbors offered the Obion Fire Department $5000 to put out the fire, which would more than cover the fee Gene Cranick did not pay. Considering that the fire department was on site watching the house burn and refused this offer, it seems they wanted the house to burn regardless.
Wtf...so the neighbors offer to pay and he offers to pay? Now that's just being spiteful.

Care to elaborate on that provocative statement?
