Very sad. I hope people will soon learn that prescription drugs can be just as dangerous as street drugs when used improperly.

While reading about Giraldo's death I learned that Robert Schimmel had also died earlier this month. It's too bad, he was one of the funniest standups I've ever seen.

Oh damn, I had heard that he overdosed but was in stable condition... like yesterday. The reports just say "prescription drugs".... I'm guessing oxycontin.

He was always my favorite on the Roast shows, great standup. And I know he'd have a good joke about this...

I always liked Giraldo. He was starting to get a little more attention lately, too. By all accounts, he was a really nice guy. I'm sad he's gone.

Fuck... I feel like this is the first comedian in my lifetime (and I realize there are others who people might feel similarly about [Chris Farley, Phil Hartman, Mitch Hedberg, et al], but this guy is the only one for me) who was really THAT great and died too young... his talent was truly greater than his career will show... he still had his best work before him... what a shame...

I never really knew who he was. Now I wish I had.

It seems he was never in stable condition:
Greg Giraldo Death : Comedian Dies – Greg Giraldo died after an accidental overdose. He had survived for several days in the critical care unit, but ultimately died at the age of 44. He had reportedly taken prescription medication.
TMZ reports his family pulled the plug after he spent five days in a coma.

Sigh. They all die too young. We always wish someone could be around longer, life is always too short whether it's twenty years or sixty. It also seems that whatever contributes to someone being able to be funny also contributes to some pretty bad emotional struggles (depression and whatnot) ... I think it's what gives them either an edge to or nuance to their work.

But it sucks... and he was only 44. It's getting weirder and weirder to reach an age where my peers are dying.

Shit. It didn't occur to me that I would/could eventually reach that stage in life.

Right now, I'm at the point where my peers are making babies left and right and/or screwing their lives up. It's actually really rare for me to meet someone whom I intuitively know will 'make it.'
