    Default Mass Animal Extinction

Mass Extinctions Reset Earth's Diversity of Animals | Future Mass Extinction Threat | LiveScience

It seems that severe damage to the ecosystem is approaching all to soon because of careless human practices on the environment. What should be done about this in order to prevent such an event from occurring and to what obligation are we responsible for the protection of the environment, its inhabitants, and the ecosystem as a whole?

As george carlin once joked in one of his standups, over 99% of the animal species on this planet that have ever been around are gone, LONG gone, and it had absolutely nothing to do with us. "We didn't kill them all. they just..... disappeared!". We highly over-exaggerate our effect on the earth's systems, EVEN after the industrial revolution and considering the constant deforestation we do.

I find it to be an illogical inductive inference to say that we are the ones that have caused the extinction of all these species out there simply because A) we're successful and very prolific/present and B) species are dying. What you are really saying is that the species like Dodo bird and the Panda bear would be A-ok and plentiful if humans were never around. I'm sorry, but I'm just not buying that. I conjecture that those organisms would have had survival problems independently of our existence. Most species are slated for doom regardless of whether or not we're around to be the ones to give that final push into the "extinction" pile, and there's absolutely no way we could ever save them all. And that's sad, but it's the way it is on this planet (and maybe even all planets that support a lot of life)

I don't disagree that some species are going extinct, but we really have no idea to what extent. And we have no idea what the extinction rate would be without human influence.
"We grow up thinking that beliefs are something to be proud of, but they're really nothing but opinions one refuses to reconsider. Beliefs are easy. The stronger your beliefs are, the less open you are to growth and wisdom, because "strength of belief" is only the intensity with which you resist questioning yourself. As soon as you are proud of a belief, as soon as you think it adds something to who you are, then you've made it a part of your ego."
