eh, some are born marksmen, others are made. Not too surprising that the afghans have some of the former.

That's more reassuring than considering they might be making them.
    Go to sleep, iguana.

Alot of these snipers are using the Lee Enfield rifle.

Quite a rifle I tell you, with a kick.

I have one of these (Enfield No 4s). It's not the first rifle I'd choose for sniping, but if it was the only rifle I had I believe I could make it work for the task.

Well there are plenty of them around Afghanistan due to the British invasions and Afghanistan being a British buffer state against Russian expansion.

When my father enlisted in the Marines during the Korean War (the first one?), he was asked to volunteer to be a sniper due to his expert marksmanship, but he refused. He preferred to come home alive.

But the sniper has caused the most damage—a deadly reminder that the Taliban insurgency has its share of well-trained fighters capable of frustrating the allied mission.
This is already well-known because we're the ones who trained them. The US Army Special Forces trained them in guerrilla warfare to fight against the Soviets.

I read this article this morning.

Snipers* are pretty much crap for morale. I'm sort of surprised this doesn't happen more often. I can't imagine there is a big shortage of older Russian rifles laying around that insurgents can take potshots with.

*I use this term in the sense of "person who shoots from concealment", not highly trained marksman/reconnaissance operator. I was unsure if all the shots he was taking were from the quoted 600 yard estimate or if he's moved around a bit, but hunters out there that can hit a 9 inch (pie-plate size) target inside of 400 yards with a little practice aren't uncommon.
Don't know how much it'll bend til it breaks.

Well the "first" Korean war was back in 1894-96, so I presume your talking about the more famous 1950-53 war?
