I agree that there is such a thing as relative poverty... however, one can also discuss absolute poverty, which is poverty in objective terms. This involves some very binary questions about whether someone has access to sufficient food, potable water, clothing, shelter, and medical care to sustain life.

In this latter sense, poverty really isn't subjective.

Like everyone, Marx was right about some things, and very wrong about others.

Americans at large don't seem to realize how pervasive a legacy his ideas have in mainstream sociological academia. It's basically him and Durkheim. Nearly everyone else's idea is just derivative of theirs (symbolic interactionism is something of its own, though).

There are, unfortunately, a lot of people who would take this knowledge as a signal to reject the entire field of sociology rather than acknowledge Marx. It is fundamental fallacious reasoning, but common reasoning.
    Go to sleep, iguana.

Just a note to those talking about Adam Smith. His hypothesis was actually that if you let everybody live in a way to satisfy their own needs, common wealth would increase BECAUSE people are held in a social context to act also in the interest of the other. He was not encouraging self interested greed.

He was not, that's right, he was merely seeking to harness it for the common good but he wasnt a psychologist and wouldnt have been answering the question as to whether or not the economy casts individuals in a certain mold or vice versa, asking questions about positive and negative reinforcement or social processes resulting in the creation of individual or social character.

Markedly these questions dont even get made until society has reached a certain level of prosperity.

Well, if people would do it on their own, there wouldn't necessarily need to be a law. And some people would, I'm certain. But for the rest.... that's what we call taxes. And yes, I do think the rich should pay more taxes.
Masquerading as a normal person day after day is exhausting.

    Not exclusively, no.
