Default France votes to ban burqa

BBC News - French MPs vote to ban Islamic full veil in public
After the vote, Justice Minister Michele Alliot-Marie said it was a victory for democracy and for French values.
"Values of freedom against all the oppressions which try to humiliate individuals; values of equality between men and women, against those who push for inequality and injustice."
    What say ye?

They should have banned something truly offensive and humiliating. Perhaps crocs, or even LIVESTRONGs.

Well, I dont know that much about the arguments of either side, and too tired now to find out, but I will be happy to watch the news when they take this idea to the next symbols. I want to see swastika banned!

They say it brings luck, but I admit a preference for the four-leafed clover.

I bet the nazis would ink clover over the banned tattoos.

I like how the French Communist MP called them "walking coffins". I agree with that sentiment.

Time to get rid of burqas.

Is it right to force people to embrace freedom?

I certainly agree with this part

"30,000 euros and a one-year jail term for men who force their wives to wear the burka"

Although... i'm not quite sure of the fine. Possibly they could swap it for some kind of public humiliation
"We knew he was someone who had a tragic flaw, that's where his greatness came from"

I'm torn between the need for conformity, and need to let cultures determine their own destiny. I can't feel strongly one way or the other. My gut feeling is that a "ban" is too extreme, but it would be safer, I think, to let the majority have their way.
