There's a difference between capitalism and being held hostage by private firms.

    True.

In practical terms, though, there is little difference between completely unregulated capitalism and being held hostage by private firms.

The whole reason this dicussion involves the content it does is because the political culture that is currently present on this forum, many others, and I dare say the American culture at large, is one that's increasingly influenced by die-hard anti-regulators who think that the only true capitalism is a competely unregulated one, and that wanting the federal government to oversee damn near any business/commerce/finance/etc.. is tantamount to socialism.

Just look at the Tea Party.

    Indeed.

Canada is a capitalist country, first and foremost. We have perhaps what you could call more socialist elements (health care, employment insurance etc.) but when it comes to creating business, Canada is ranked as the third-most entrepreneurial country in the world:

Who in the world is entrepreneurial?

Basically, paying taxes and receiving services makes any country somewhat socialist, does it not? I don't believe there is a pure capitalist (or pure socialist for that matter) country in the entire world.

We just have a tad more common sense and trust with one another than Americans. We take care of people who are sick aka universal health care. We are more accepting of other nations, people who come here are from all over the world. Canada has no death penalty, and guns are illegal to own other than a licensed rifle for hunting purposes. Americans are pumped up with fear, chicken wings and superficial ideas of social status. It's sad that many left wing Ideas are only beginning to harvest with the new president.

That's a pretty low bar at this point. America has a sort of egotism epidemic.
