Default Why are French people such snobs?

You know, as a counterpart to the "why are Americans so fearful" thread.

But seriously, why? It seems to me that the surrounding countries have as much to be snobbish about. Why does France stand out in its snobbishness? I'm curious.

Note: I would have started a thread "why are Finns so insecure," but I don't know any Finns on this board that would be able to answer, but if you happen to be Finnish, we can discuss that too.

    Are they?

Having never traveled to France, I always wondered if this was hype or had a tangible basis in reality. Seems like a self-confirming bias. Can't imagine an entire population of people has in common a shared, negative stereotype.

    Maybe Americans are too sensitive?

Apparently Japanese people are quite sensitive to that too.

Also: Blackmail just admitted it, so it's open to discussion.

    1) I don't think they're generally any more snobbish than any other nationality, just that the snobbish element is particularly vocal.

    2) There are shedloads of Finns on this board actually, I'm really surprised you don't know any. I'd have thought there were more Finns than French posting. Are they particularly known for being insecure though? I didn't know that...

    Really?

An entire chunk of humanity endears itself to being bitchy? This can't be right.

of course Finnish people are insecure? Haven't you ever heard that old joke?

Conan O'Brien made fun of about every nationality, the only people he ever got offended letters back were from Finns...

Why not? If you have to be known for something, snobbishness seems to be as good a trait as any.

Parisians can be snobbish. Outside Paris, not as much.
If someone goes to NYC and nowhere else, they might decide that all Americans are rude too...

We are all rude, though. People from New York tend to think that it's the center of the universe, the rest of the US is like that too, isn't it?

Yeah, but doesn’t this ideal seem too subjective/open to external bias to be anything independently reliable?
