Hmm. I am ambivalent on the idea of "ritual nicks."

In the United States many boys are already circumcised and adopted into Jewish families. This is still not "fine, whoop-dee-doo." Something similar to what seems to be described here as a "ritual nick" has to be preformed to enter the covenant, even though the baby's already circumcised. If the baby isn't, or the kid is older and isn't, whatever, no one's going to take him away, but he'll have trouble if he wants to become a rabbi or something.

So, the mutilation is not the point. The covenant is. What is more important to these people, the religion or the repression of sex?

Really? Did you not read my post where I noted that last month America (I presume you're from there) legalised this exact thing? Due to pressure that has been reversed this month but suggesting this shows something is "wrong with Australia" when they haven't legalised it, they are simply attempting to find a solution to a terrible problem, is, well, really?

Yes, the Oedipus Complex is about the fear of having your penis cut off.

Today the bien pensant decry the Oedipus Complex while not noticing that part of their penis has already been cut off.

If I remember correctly, the AAP just recommended it, it was never legalized. That's no better than what Australia has done so far, I'm just sayin'.

They made it part of their official policy. Australia and New Zealand are only talking about it.

Either way, it was still against federal law; I'm glad they back-tracked, though.

I agree. The only reason I mentioned it is because there are people who have jumped into this thread with emotion, not facts, which is exactly what sensationalist news articles seek to induce. It's a complex issue and jumping on "Australia" because it sounds so effed up is short sighted and uninformed.

    This will not end well...
But it will at least be poetic, I suppose...

Hmm... But what if it does end well?
Then I suppose it will be a different sort of poetry, a preferable sort...
A sort I could become accustomed to...

Fixed so it's more accurate, it's the Royal Australian New Zealand College of Obstetricians who are looking at it m'dear.
