I don't see why Iraq and Afghanistan are so surprising. The US has fought a lot over bad/faulty/late information. I mean, doesn't make it right, but also doesn't make it surprising.

Oh dear lord. You have just opened the can of worms that is the Western presence in the Middle East.

Y'all can stick here, but I'm going to duck for cover. Not from terrorists, mind you, but from arguably the most sticky part of American history.

Surprisingly Australian aborigines were very fond of the Queen and regarded her as their own. And so if they ran into trouble with the authorities on the ground, they would directly petition the Queen. And naturally the Queen would respond promptly, directing the local authorities to follow the law.

And yes, it always surprised me that they regarded the Queen as their Queen. Fortunately the Queen felt the same way.

That seems more than a little dubious considering how relations between indigenous cultures and colonial powers have historically gone.

You can love the Queen and still hate your colonial oppressors. In fact, it's one of the biggest advantages of a constitutional monarchy: the state and government are two different entities, and the majesty of the state need not be sullied by the sludge of common politics.

Yes, and apart from the Constitutional advantages, the Monarchy puts a face on the State.

I may point out that it was often the British Government that protected the rights of indigenous peoples over the settlers themselves. That certainly happened in Australia, it happened in America (before the revolution) when there was an attempt to limit the expansion of land that was settled. It was also the British empire that first abolished slavery and then actively used its Navy to try and destroy the slave trade. The 'land of the free' on the other hand was one of the last places to abolish slavery, even autocratic Russia managed to abolish serfdom beforehand.
